THE ACROPOLIS, A PLACE FULL OF HISTORY, A MUST PLACE

The Acropolis

The Acropolis is part of the World Heritage List of UNESCO so, if you are in Athens do not miss this world's wealth!
This patrimony dominates all the city, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Athens leaving the mountains to the sea.
Know that the Acropolis is composed of several monuments including the famous Parthenon but also the Temple of Athena, or (less known) the Erechtheion. This is a legacy of Ancient Greece which symbolizes the spirit and classical civilization.

For more informations about the history of this world patrimony, I invite you to check on this website : Unesco.org

The Parthenon
First, know that the Parthenon has never been so devoid of color that it is today.

Indeed, in the Ancient period the Parthenon was painted and no plots marble was nude of colors.
Would I forgot to specify that it was entirely made of marble?

The monument has been partially reconstructed and is currently under reconstruction. This explains the color differences of the marble, marked by time.

However, when we passes near this immensity, we cannot keep from imagining life in antiquity.

The Erechtheion

This ancient temple dates from the time of the Peloponnesian War.
It is located just few steps from the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena.

Inside this temple was the statue of Athena and also the tombs of the kings Cecrops and Erechtheus.

The temple also had a salt water well and a sacred olive tree. The olive tree is a gift from the goddess Athena to the population. The story says that the donation was made after a dispute with Poseidon.

Th small statues that replace the columns are called Caryatids which means young girls.
