CARNIVAL IN GREECE, AN IMPORTANT CULTURAL EVENT



The Greek Carnival

Carnival in Greece is part of the culture. This carnival period in Greece is called "Apokries." This is a time where we eat, drink, dance and it is also a time when costumes are waiting for you!
Traditionally, it begins 10 weeks before Easter and ends in triumph on the last Sunday before the Pure Monday is first day of Lent.


The origins and customs of carnival festivities date of Ancient Greece and are linked to the myth of Dionysus, god of wine and revelry. In fact, Carnival is directly linked to the heritage and the cultural heritage of all regions. And so it is every year they revive local ancestral customs.
The Patras Carnival is the most famous of Greece, with a high rank in the world rankings carnivals. It is not the Rio Carnival, but it certainly don't make him lose size!
Carnival of Xanthi (Thrace) and that of Skyros when relive them over traditionnal customs. At Galaxidi, the Carnival celebrations reach their climax on Monday with Pure parade of boats, transformed into naval battle, the ruthless "warriors" fight with incredible amounts of multicolored flour.

- Tsiknopempti or "Burnt Thursday": February 20
- Tsiknopempti Weekend: Friday, February 21 - Saturday, February 23
- Main Carnival Weekend: Friday, February 28 - Sunday, March 2
- Clean Monday: Monday, March 3
